Beatriz Feijóo Gómez is a sixth-year student at Northeastern University, graduating December 2022 with a Master of Science in Engineering Management and having previously received her Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in May 2021.

Beatriz has always had an affinity for math and science, and growing up one of her favorite things to do was build models of the wonders of the world, like the Taj Mahal. She always thought she wanted to be an architect, but eventually decided on civil engineering because of the broader range of applications and focus on structural design. At Northeastern, she has truly loved getting to learn and understand civil engineering, as well as combine her love of architecture, numbers, math, and science.

In her time at Northeastern, Beatriz has had a truly global experience. She kicked off her college career in Australia, spending her first semester there as an NU.in student. She was also a Program Assistant to a Dialogue of Civilizations in engineering economy and Turkish cultural values that took place in Turkey in July of 2022. On this Dialogue, she acted as Professor Mohammad Dehghani’s teaching assistant, helping students with projects, tutoring those in need, and acting as a chaperone and coordinator for the cultural experiences. Additionally, she completed a global co-op in Singapore, where she worked at Faithful + Gould SNC Lavalin Group as both the Project Management Intern and the Singapore Grand Prix Track and Civil Infrastructure Intern. Here, she worked on the Formula 1 team and managed contractors for the installation of barriers, track finishes, fences, curbs, and the internal traffic management system. She loved having the opportunity to travel around Singapore and neighboring countries with fellow co-ops.

In another co-op experience, she worked remotely for ADL Ventures as the Building Innovation Intern. In this role she was able to research building technologies and work with start-ups and government programs in order to help them develop their company or program. She conducted market research on 4D radar technology, then interviewed people and companies on how this technology would fit into their company in order to determine the market viability. She also developed market projections for the continued automatization of the construction industry by auditing hundreds of construction companies and quantifying current construction capacity. This was Bea’s favorite co-op, as it was at the intersection of business and engineering. In fact, it was this role that made her realize that she wanted to do more than just engineering. This realization led her to pursue a Master’s in Engineering Management and continue to explore this intersection.

After joining the PlusOne Program and going on the Dialogue with Professor Dehghani, Beatriz joined the Galante Program in order to continue developing professional skills and to network with her peers. Through this program, she has so far attended a seminar event and has begun working with Bradley Miller to run the group’s LinkedIn page for outreach and publicity. Beatriz plans to use her Galante grant to continue to develop her business skills and get her Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification, and potentially her Project Management Professional Certification as well.

After graduation this Fall, Beatriz hopes to work in the technology industry with a focus in data analytics, building innovation, and sustainability. She will be utilizing her certifications to holistically understand the business side of engineering, as well as use statistics and data analytics in order to improve process efficiency and efficacy.
